Colonial Hauntings of New York, New Jersey and Pennsylvania

Free with museum admission

Explore several haunted locations that were investigated during the 18th and early 19th centuries. Garrett Husveth, from Haunted New Jersey, will show images and discuss the history of these locations (some are right here in Morris County!), investigative work that he has personally done at these sites and accounts of haunting phenomena experienced in each house.

 

African-American Life During the 20th Century

Join Dr. Lillie Edwards, Director of Pan-African Studies and Professor of History at Drew University in a discussion about the changing social culture for African-Americans during the 20th Century. This lecture is offered in conjunction with the exhibition, Black Cinema: The Vintage Years, on view through November 23, 2008.

Tour the Morris Museum’s newest exhibitions with Ann Aptaker, Curator of Exhibitions. Explore Timeless: The Art of Drawing, featuring exquisite drawings from artists who reside in New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania and Delaware. Other featured exhibitions will include Black Cinema: The Vintage Years, Dollhouses and Dolls from the Morris Museum Collection.

 

Strangers in Suburbia: Race, Class and Ethnicity in Suburban Motion Pictures

This presentation contrasts the mainstream Hollywood image of suburbia – a privileged environment for upper-middle and upper-class Americans – with those few films focusing on blue collar families, white ethnic groups, Asians, Hispanics and African-Americans. In addition, the discussion examines why filmmakers’ favorite suburban “outsiders” are creators such as E.T. In conjunction with the exhibition, Black Cinema: The Vintage Years, on view through November 23, 2008, this program is offered through the Horizon Speakers Bureau of the New Jersey Council for the Humanities, a state partner of the National Endowment for the Humanities.

 

Holiday Card Making Workshop

Learn creative techniques for making unique holiday cards! Marge Thuen, a Stampin' Up independent demonstrator will share tips and techniques while you create three projects from start to finish. All materials, except adhesive, will be provided. Light morning refreshments will be served.

 

Beginning Photography: The Basics and Beyond

Saturdays, November 22 and December 6 (two-part workshop)

9:30 a.m. – 12:30 p.m.

$80 members / $90 non-members

Professional photographer, Nancy Ori will discuss basic use of available light, camera controls, composition, and camera accessories for digital and film cameras. Learn tips on how to simplify the technical information. Other topics include: action photography, portraits, close ups and landscapes. This workshop is designed for the beginning level photographer.  Bring a camera and its instruction booklet, notebook and photo project ideas to the first session. Light morning refreshments will be served.

 

Colonial and Victorian Christmas Customs

Decorations of holly and mistletoe, gingerbread and caroling, these are just a few of the Christmas customs that have been handed down form earlier times. Join Judith Krall-Russo, a Food Historian, to learn about the similarities and differences between a Colonial Christmas and a Victorian celebration. Discover what foods were prepared and enjoyed during the holiday festivities.

 

Music, Mystery and Motion: Getting to Know the Guinness Collection

4:30 – 6 p.m.

Tour the Murtogh D. Guinness collection of mechanical musical instruments and automata. Engage in discussion with museum collections staff while exploring how automatic instruments work, what they meant in their time and how they were made. Participants will enjoy the music during a live demonstration of several objects from the collection.
